Full Review

Sans is one of the newer companies in the space of countertop reverse osmosis water filters, however they seem to have learned from the mistakes of previous companies and have designed a very well built system.

The device has a three stage filter system with prefilter, RO, and post VOC filter. It then has a final UV sterilizer in the internal water storage tank to keep bacteria from proliferating. This arrangement is more robust than many of the two stage filters we see on the market.

The Sans uses an external carafe as well as an internal dispensing tank, this means when the machine is full, you will have nearly two liters of water at your disposal in relatively quick fashion. One really cool thing that the manufacturer did was build the machine to know when the carafe is full via float switch, but also to allow dispensing of water without the carafe in place. As you can see from the photos, you can just set your 1L or smaller water bottle under it and press the dispense button. For quickest filling, you can just pour the water from the carafe into your bottle.

This machine is one of the only ones on the market that makes it easier to cook with purified water, just set your pot under the machine and press dispense, it will keep running until pressed again, or if the machine is out of water and needs a refill.

It features instant hot water for those that wish to make coffee or tea, and also has a TDS meter that reads the total dissolved solids from the output of the machine. This is an OK indicator of the quality of water produced, though I would like to see another TDS on the incoming water side so that we could see the differential from filtration.

It uses two pumps in total, one pressure pump to force water through the filters and reverse osmosis membrane, and another smaller delivery pump that transfers water from the fresh holding tank to the carafe or vessel of choice.

In terms of laboratory testing, the machine has been tested against NSF Standard 58, as well as some other individual tests. These results are available by clicking the “Test Results” link in this page. While the machine was tested against NSF standards, it was tested by SGS, a Chinese laboratory with a good reputation, but not on the list of top US water filter testing labs like NSF direct, WQA or IAPMO. As the company grows, it is expected that they will acquire more testing credentials from US labs, there is no reason to disbelieve SGS, but more testing is never a bad thing in this market.

All in all, this is one of the best countertop reverse osmosis water filters in the market. The only downside of being a new company is sourcing replacement filters for the long run, however only time will tell how the company handles the long-term business of replacement filters and the incentives for offering new machines with identical filters.
